There are two commissioned Pennsylvania Notaries at the AIS office. Multiple types of documents can be prepared and recognized by notaries:
The most common notarial act is the completion of Affidavits. These are voluntary, written, sworn statements.
Notaries also conduct Verifications. There are two types of verifications. Unsworn, which does not need to be notarized, and sworn which does.
Acknowledgments are another act completed by Pennsylvania Notaries. These are voluntary, unsworn statements, which includes an oral declaration by the customer acknowledging his or her signature on a document. The notary then includes a written statement. These are usually used for public recording of documents.
Certificates are yet another act completed by notaries. This is a statement by the notary that an event actually occurred or certifies the accuracy of a copy of an original.
A Deposition is an involuntary, written, sworn statement usually made for use as testimony in court.
The Protest is a certificate of dishonor. It notifies maker and possibly endorses of non-payment of a negotiable instrument. This instrument is no longer used in the Commonwealth within the banking community.
In all cases a notary is responsible for demanding the customer's personal appearance, properly identifying the customer, having the customer swear to the statement and personally witnessing the signature.
